Hello and welcome to My Town Kitchen.
My name is Natalie Harper , and this site is my love letter to food, family, and the neighborhoods that shaped me.

Roots in a Small Town
I was born in San Antonio, Texas, in a lively neighborhood where everyone knew everyone, and food was at the center of every gathering. My earliest memories are tied to the smells drifting through our block: smoky barbecue from my neighbor Mr. Harris, the scent of fresh tortillas from my abuela’s kitchen, and the sweet perfume of cinnamon and sugar whenever my mother baked pan dulce.
Growing up, I learned quickly that the kitchen wasn’t just a place for cooking—it was the town square of our home. Friends dropped by unannounced, cousins came running in and out, and somehow there was always enough food to feed whoever showed up. The table might have been crowded, but it was full of laughter, stories, and love. That sense of community became part of me.
Discovering My Passion
In my twenties, life took me away from my hometown. I studied education and worked as a teacher for many years. Teaching was rewarding, but stressful, and I often found myself turning to cooking as a form of therapy. After long days in the classroom, I’d spend hours experimenting with recipes, trying to recreate the flavors of home while also discovering new ones from cookbooks and friends.
Travel added another layer to my journey. A trip to New York introduced me to bagels and deli culture, a summer in New Mexico taught me the beauty of green chile in everything, and visits to friends in Louisiana opened my eyes to the heart and soul of Cajun and Creole cuisine. Each place reminded me that every town has its own kitchen, with flavors that tell its unique story.
Why “My Town Kitchen”?
When I turned forty, I felt a pull to share my passion more openly. My kids were teenagers, more independent, and I finally had time to focus on a dream of my own. That’s when the idea for My Town Kitchen came to life.
The name reflects two truths: first, that my hometown kitchen is the foundation of who I am; and second, that wherever you are, your kitchen is part of your town, your story. I wanted a space where recipes weren’t just about ingredients and steps, but about people, culture, and belonging.
What You’ll Find Here
At My Town Kitchen, I share:
- Family favorites that have been passed down through generations—like my abuela’s tamales and my mother’s arroz con leche.
- Town-inspired dishes that capture the essence of the places I’ve lived and visited, from Texas brisket to New Orleans gumbo.
- Weeknight meals for busy parents, because I know firsthand how chaotic life can get.
- Stories behind the recipes, because I believe food tastes better when you understand the hands and hearts behind it.
Every recipe here has a little bit of my history and a little bit of the towns that inspired me.
Looking Ahead
My dream is that My Town Kitchen becomes more than just a food blog—it becomes a gathering place. I want you to feel like you’ve stepped into my kitchen, sat at my table, and shared in the laughter, warmth, and comfort that cooking has always brought me.
Food is powerful. It connects us to our roots, bridges us to others, and tells stories words sometimes can’t. Through this site, I hope you’ll not only find meals you love but also a sense of connection to the places and people that flavor your own life.
So, welcome to My Town Kitchen. Pull up a chair, pour yourself something warm, and let’s share this journey together.
With love,
Natalie Harper
