Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef round steak
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil (vegetable or canola)
  • 1 cup whole milk (for gravy)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for gravy)
  • 2 tbsp poultry seasoning or paprika (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tenderize the steak by pummeling it between plastic wrap until about half an inch thick.
  2. Set up a breading station: In one bowl, mix flour, salt, pepper, and optional seasonings. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and eggs.
  3. Dredge each steak first in the buttermilk mixture, then coat in seasoned flour.
  4. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat until shimmering. Fry each steak for about 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown.
  5. For the gravy, melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; whisk in leftover flour from breading for one minute before gradually adding milk and stirring until thickened.
  6. Serve the chicken fried steak drizzled with homemade gravy.
